  Over at Coyote Yipps, Lou writes to Janet about a guard dog of his acquaintance that doesn’t hesitate to chase or even kill coyotes that try to raid the livestock he protects. But, to his employers’ chagrin, the dog overtly looks the other way for one specific coyote, letting her snatch one chicken every couple of weeks. There’s reason to believe that the two have known each other for a couple of years, with on-camera evidence that the coyote would sometimes let the dog chase her around just for the thrill of it.

• Kinky Tail survives (September 26, 2026)

  A brief exchange about Kinky Tail, a Californian coyote seen by local wildlife observers to have birthed and raised nine pups all by herself earlier this year, after the death of her mate and oldest child to the many threats all around them—wolves, probably, or humans, both violently territorial.

• Coyotes on two coasts (September 13, 2025)

  Janet Kessler lives in San Fransisco and maintains Coyote Yipps, a blog that documents her observations about the local coyotes living their lives. Her most recent post features a coyote dad musically summoning its family before beginning the evening together. My favorite post is a photo collection of a young, solitary coyote who digs up a clearly beloved toy on a golf course, plays energetically with it, then re-buries it. It has a sad angle; Kessler tracks and observes these animals well enough to know their individual stories, including how this one had recently lost its brother and playmate.
